Compatriots Taylor Fritz and Sebastian Korda will clash in the second round of the Canadian Open 2024.
Fritz, who claimed the bronze medal in men's doubles at the Paris Olympics a week ago, took on World No. 36 Mariano Navone in the first round here. Both players kept on winning their service games with ease in the opening set.
Navone then served to stay in the set at 5-4 and faced a couple of break points, which were also set points. He fended them off and even had a chance to close out the game after that but couldn't do so.
Fritz created another break point opportunity and managed to secure the set this time. The second set was a walk in the park for him as he dropped only one game in it to register a 6-4, 6-1 victory.
Korda captured the biggest title of his career with a win over Flavio Cobolli at last week's Citi Open. He was up against home favorite Vasek Pospisil in the first round of the Canadian Open. The match came to an abrupt end after only three games as the American's opponent retired due to an injury.

Korda extended his winning streak to six matches after Pospisil's mid-match retirement. The 24-year-old looks to be in good form after his title-winning run in Washington over the past weekend.
Following a successful clay and grass swing, Fritz didn't need any time to re-acquaint himself with hardcourts. He got the better of Navone without facing a single break point and struck 19 winners against 13 unforced errors.
Both of Fritz's prior wins over Korda have been on clay. The latter has momentum on his side and will be keen to do some damage this time and attempt to one-up his fellow American.
However, Korda hasn't won back-to-back matches at the Masters level this year. Since the start of 2023, he has achieved this feat only once, which was at last year's Shanghai Masters, where he made the semifinals.
Fritz has fared comparatively better in that aspect, with a semifinal at the Italian Open being his best result at the Masters this year. When it comes to hardcourts, he reached the fourth round of the Indian Wells Masters. Based on his results, he will be favored to beat the in-form Korda.
