Ninth seed Daria Kasatkina will take on Amanda Anisimova in the third round of the China Open 2024.
Kasatkina received a bye into the second round, where she was up against lucky loser Jana Fett. The two traded service breaks to kick things off before the Russian swept the next five games to claim the opener.
Kasatkina raced to a 5-1 lead in the second set courtesy of a double break. However, she faltered while trying to close the match as Fett secured a break of serve to make it 5-2. However, she broke back immediately to register a 6-1, 6-2 win.
Anisimova received a first-round bye as well and faced Camila Osorio in the second round. The American got outfoxed in the first set and could only nab a solitary game for herself in it.
Osorio struck first in the second set, though Anisimova issued a swift response this time to level the score. The latter snagged another break to go 4-2 up but her opponent pegged her back to remain on even terms.
Anisimova secured yet another break to go 5-3 up and proceeded to serve out the set in the following game to level the match. Osorio was on the cusp of victory in the third set but the American overcame a 4-0 deficit to wrap up a 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 comeback win.

Anisimova staged an impressive comeback to sneak past Osorio. The latter's grit gave her the upper hand plenty of times but once the former cut down on her errors and focused, there was no stopping her.
Aside from a minor hiccup while serving for the match, Kasatkina didn't face many problems against Fett. She would've certainly hoped that Osorio would've gotten rid of Anisimova for her.
The American has won all four matches against Kasatkina in straight sets. Anisimova's powerful shotmaking has proved to be a cut above her rival's craftiness and guile. Furthermore, the Russian has underperformed at the hardcourt WTA 1000 events this year and has a 5-6 record in them, including her latest win.
This is Anisimova's second WTA 1000 tournament on hardcourts this year. She reached the final of her only other event at this level on the surface, which was at the Canadian Open, and she beat Kasatkina back then too. The American is likely to extend her supremacy in this rivalry with another win.
