Jannik Sinner vs Andrey Rublev preview

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner and Andrey Rublev will clash in the quarterfinal of an ATP 1000 tournament for the second consecutive time at the Cincinnati Open.

Sinner, who lost to Rublev at the Canadian Masters earlier this month, will be keen on exacting revenge. The Italian had come into the tournament with an impressive 44-5 win-loss record for the season.

Having opened his campaign with a straight-sets win over Alex Michelsen, Sinner was given a walkover into the quarterfinal.

Rublev, meanwhile, continued his hot streak en route to the quarterfinals. He is yet to lose a set, having won both his Cincinnati encounters against Brandon Nakashima and Zhang Zhizhen in straight sets.

The Russian had earlier beaten the likes of Sinner, Nakashima, and Mattero Arnaldi on his way to the Canadian Masters final. Although his run ultimately ended with a loss to Alexei Popyrin in the final, he still managed to improve his season win-loss record to 32-16.

There’s very little to choose between Jannik Sinner and Andrey Rublev game-wise, given that both men possess similarly powerful groundstrokes and like to take control of the baseline.

The one area where the Italian may have a slight edge over his opponent is consistency on serve. Even in his Canadian Masters loss to Rublev, Sinner had the higher number of aces and was winning more percentage of points behind his first delivery.

Rublev, however, has the uncanny ability to turn up the heat from the baseline. The Russian can produce mini-hot streaks and patches, during which he is simply unplayable. However, this brand of tennis is difficult to sustain for longer periods, and his matches also tend to feature extended periods of erratic play.

Given that Sinner will be keen on avenging his loss from Montreal, there's every chance that he will come into this contest with a strategy in mind. If Sinner can maintain his composure during Rublev's inevitable hot streaks and deliver consistent service games, he should be better equipped to withstand the Russian's firepower this time around.

Prediction: Sinner to win in two tight sets
