Frances Tiafoe vs Daniel Elahi Galan preview
Fifth seed Tiafoe will lock horns with Colombia's Daniel Elahi Galan in the second round of the 2024 Mubadala Citi DC Open on Tuesday, July 30.
Tiafoe enters the men's singles draw after a disappointing exit from the Atlanta Open, where he was seeded third. He started his campaign with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win over Aslan Karatsev but lost to unseeded Yoshihito Nishioka in straight sets in the quarterfinals.
Nishioka created six break point opportunities on Tiafoe's serve and converted two to secure a 7-6(2), 6-2 win. The Japanese hit nine aces and won 70 of the 123 points played during the match.
Daniel Elahi Galan's previous competitive appearance came at the 2024 Generali Open Kitzuhel, where he produced a decent effort. He moved up to the main draw by overcoming the likes of Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Hamad Medjedovic in the qualifiers.
He then defeated Medjedovic again in the first round of the main draw before losing 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 to Facundo Diaz Acosta in the Round of 16. His Mubadala Citi DC Open campaign opened with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Maxime Cressy from the USA in the first round, whereas Tiafoe received a bye.

Frances Tiafoe vs Daniel Elahi Galan prediction
Tiafoe will take the court at the Rock Creek Park Tennis Center in Washington DC as the home favorite against Elahi Galan. Placed 29th in the ATP singles ranking, he has struggled to collect wins since the turn of the year with his win-loss record for 2024 being 16-16.
Galan too hasn't enjoyed much success on the court this season. He has played 21 matches on tour and lost 15. He currently sits outside the Top 100 in the 124th position.
The Colombian has spent less time on the hard courts on tour this season with a 1-3 win-loss tally. Tiafoe, on the other hand, has spent more time on the surface, playing a total of 16 matches on the surface in 2024 and registering a win-loss record of 8-8. Even though his success rate is 50 percent, he's likely to beat Galan on Tuesday.
Pick: Frances Tiafoe to win in three sets.
