Second seed Leylah Fernandez is set to open her Tennis in the Land campaign against Ana Bogdan in a highly anticipated first-round encounter on Tuesday, August 20.
Fernandez enters Cleveland with a 22-17 match record this season. She kicked off her season with a second-round run in the Australian Open and a quarterfinal showing at the Qatar Open. After a series of early defeats, she achieved two consecutive wins for the first time in nearly two months with a third-round run in the French Open.
Fernandez showcased impressive form on grass, reaching the quarterfinals in Birmingham and the final in Eastbourne, where she lost to Daria Kasatkina. She was, however, ousted in the second round of Wimbledon by Caroline Wozniacki. Seeded 15th at her home tournament in Toronto, she reached the second round, where she lost to Ashylyn Krueger. She played some lights-out tennis in Cincinnati last week, beating fourth seed Elena Rybakina and an in-form Diana Shnaider. Bogdan, meanwhile, comes into Cleveland with an 11-17 match record this season. Her best result yet is a runner-up finish at the Winner Open in her hometown of Cluj-Napoca, Romania. She beat Alycia Parks, top seed Arantxa Rus, and compatriot Jaqueline Cristian en route to the finals, where she was defeated by Karolina Pliskova. She also reached the third round of the French Open before going down to 15th seed Elina Svitolina.
Bogdan opened her Cleveland campaign in the qualifiers. She got the better of home favorite Shelby Rogers in the opening round in three tight sets: 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-1. Up against top seed Greet Minnen in the second round, Bogdan dominated from start to finish to register a routine 6-3, 6-3 victory.

Leylah Fernandez has been in terrific form of late and looks like a real force to be reckoned with. She put her disappointing start to the season to rest with a superb run in the second half of the season so far. Her quarterfinal finish in Cincinnati last week positions her well for a strong showing at the US Open, the final Grand Slam of the year.
Ana Bogdan, on the contrary, is looking to pick up her first main draw win since the French Open. She was tested in the first round of qualifiers in Cleveland but looked far more comfortable in the second. She's been terrific on the return but has struggled on her serve.
Fernandez enters this contest as the firm favorite to go through, given her rich vein of form and superior hard court record. Bogdan's inconsistent play has further tilted the scales in Fernandez's favor, making this match a likely one-sided affair.
