Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams storm into the third round of US Open

Both the top seeds of the men's and women’s singles event, Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams, made quick work of their respective opponents and stormed into the third round of The US Open 2014 at Flushing Meadows, New York.

Serena Williams thrashed fellow American Vania King 6-1, 6-0 in just 56 minutes. The world number one has had a poor run in the major tournaments of 2014, but, now has probably announced herself as the top contender to lift the US Open after two easy victories in the opening two rounds.

Even though she had five double faults in the match, she did not lose serve and also broke King's serve twice in the first set and thrice in the second set. Williams won a massive 88% of first serve points, losing just 3 points, whereas her opponent had a meagre 36% of first serve points won, which led to Serena breaking her serve on almost all ocassions. Williams now comes up against another fellow American Varvara Lepchenko in the third round who defeated Mona Barthel in straight sets 6-4,6-0 in her second round tie.

Novak Djokovic swept aside his opponent Paul Henri Mathieu in just 88 minutes. The Serb defeated the Frenchman 6-1,6-3,6-0.Djokovic put away all his worries of his poor showing in the tournaments leading up to the U.S Open - The Rogers Cup and The Cincinnati Masters. He did not seem to do anything wrong in his 2nd round match against the Frenchmen with 13 aces, precise winners and some scintillating drop shots.

He had an answer to everything that Mathieu threw at him. He was also helped by some poor serving by Mathieu who had 9 double faults against his name and Djokovic was able to break him a total of 7 times during the match. Mathieu did have a break point in the 5th game of the second set after hitting a few good winners against the Serb, but Novak was in no mood to "Djok" around as he proved to everyone why he is currently the world’s best. Djokoic now comes up against one of the crowd favourites - Sam Querrey. Querrey defeater his Spanish opponent Guilermo Garcia Lopez in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.

In some other matches on day 3 of the US Open, there was a big upset where Serbian world no. 8 Ana Ivanovic lost her match to Karolina Pliskova 5-7,4-6. The Men's draw did not throw any surprises as Andy Murray, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Kei Nishikori,Milos Raonic, Nick Kyrgios and John Isner progressed to the next round of the tournament.
