Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships: Results
The Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships are now underway, with World No. 1 Novak Djokovic top-seeded at the tournament. Reigning champion Roger Federer will sit out the tournament, recovering from knee surgery.
Here are the results from each day of play:
Day 1
Hyeon Chung bt Andreas Seppi 6-3, 6-4
66th ranked Chung of Korea pulled off the first upset of the day, beating a much higher-ranked Andreas Seppi in convincing fashion.
Only 19 years old, Chung only faced a single break point in the 19 games played.
Malek Jaziri bt Mikhail Youzhny 6-4, 6-1
One-time top-10 player Mikhail Youzhny has not seen the best of years in tennis. Currently at 78th spot in the singles, Youzhny entered the tournament as a qualifier, playing Tunisia’s Malek Jaziri, who at 121 would have been expected to lose to the Russian.
Down a break in the first set, Jaziri broke back and then broke Youzhny once more, and from then dominated the pair’s match entirely.
He will play Novak Djokovic in the next round, with the Serb widely expected to triumph in his match over Tommy Robredo later tonight.
Novak Djokovic bt Tommy Robredo 6-1, 6-2
In an extremely expected result, top seed Djokovic completely outplayed 41st-ranked Tommy Robredo, not allowing him a single game until 5 games in, and it was on the verge of being bageled that Robredo came back to win a single service game in the first set.
Djokovic continued to dominate in the second set, not giving the Spaniard a breather.
Robredo has not had a strong year, having dropped in the rankings already after his loss to the lower-ranked Martin Klizan in Rotterdam. The Serb, meanwhile, has continued his dominance of the past years into 2016.
