French Open 2010: Federer set for Soderling Challenge!

Roland Garros

It was an all Swiss match, when world number 1 Roger Federer had to play against his Davis cup partner Wawarinka who is seeded 20th in this year’s tournament. But, the match turned out to be anything but fatal for the world number one. Within the first 15 minutes of the game Federer managed to break Wawarinka’s serve to win the set easily in just 36 minutes; 6-3. The next set started on the rough for Federer as he lost serve and Wawarinka managed to take the lead 2-0. Once again Federer displayed sheer class to break back in the 7th game to equal up the set 4-4. From there on there was no looking back for Federer. In spite of a small hiccup in the tie-breaker where the 20th seed was 3-1 up, Federer managed to pull out a victory from the opponents jaws. Third set was nothing to talk about as the intimidation was very clear on the opposite side of the court of world number 1. Federer won the match in 1hr and 56mins. 6-3, 7-6 and 6-2.

Go Roger !

Go Roger !

Another major upset yesterday came in the form of world number two Venus Williams being shown the door by Russian Nadia Petrova. Nadia was in full spirit right from the word go. Venus was finding it extremely difficult to move in the court with the ease that she usually does. Venus Fell to the Russian in two straight sets without giving Nadia even a scare. She lost to the 19th seed 6-4, 6-3.

The rain disrupted match of Saturday, the 22 seed Justin Henin and 12th seed Maria Sharapova resumed in the morning yesterday. Both were one set a peace and no one could predict a winner. The match started out with Maria breaking Justin’s serve in the very first game taking a lead 2-0. But, the 4time French Open winner wasn’t going to go home without a fight, and fight she did. She came back strongly and completely changed the game around in just 15 minutes. Justin won the next 4 games in a row and finally managed to seal the deal with a score reading, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.

Number five seed on the other hand Robin Soderling, who managed an impossible task last year of defeating Nadal in the fourth round but couldn’t manage to take home the title. Played a match yesterday that nobody could have defeated him in. His 4th round opponent was 10th seed Marian Cilic. But, Cilic was a mere spectator of pure class and elegance. Robin won the match in 1hr 40 minutes; 6-4, 6-4, 6-3.

However, it wasn’t such a bright day for the French fans as their last hope in this tournament 8th seeded Jo Wilfred Tsonga was out done by 11th seed Mikhail Youzny. The match just lasted for over 30 minutes. Tsonga retired from the Match after losing the first set 6-2. He retired due to an ankle injury that he acquired during his last match.

Hoping that today’s matches are as predicted. And no matches are rain disrupted.
