Former top-10 player Elina Svitolina will square off against home favorite Diane Parry in the second round of the 2024 French Open on Thursday.
Svitolina was up against her old rival, former World No. 1 Karolina Pliskova, in the first round. The Ukrainian kicked off the proceedings with a break of serve in her favor but dropped the next four games to trail 4-1.
Svitolina snagged the next couple of games to get back on serve, though her efforts were in vain. Pliskova got the upper hand yet again as she claimed the next two games to capture the first set.
Svitolina squandered her early lead in the second set but struck once more towards the end to clinch the set. The two split the first four games of the decider between them, after which the Ukrainian went on a four-game run to complete a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 comeback win.
Parry, meanwhile, faced her compatriot Fiona Ferro in the opening round. The two kept up with each other until 3-3 in the first set, following which the latter bagged the next three games to take the set.
Parry jumped to a 4-0 lead in the decider and even though her opponent made an effort to fight back, she kept her at bay to claim the set. She finished the match on a high, winning four games on the trot for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory.

Both rallied from a set down to make it through their opening-round matches. Svitolina notched her fifth consecutive win over Pliskova, while Parry handed Ferro her fourth straight first-round loss in Paris.
Svitolina and Parry crossed paths just a week ago in Strasbourg, with the former coming out on top in straight sets. Her mix of defense and offense kept the Frenchwoman on the backfoot throughout the match.
However, the outcome could be different this time. Parry is no stranger to causing an upset at the French Open, having knocked out defending champion Barbora Krejcikova in the first round in 2022.
