Peyton Stearns will face teen phenom Mirra Andreeva in the third round of the 2024 French Open on Saturday.
Stearns sneaked past Lucija Ciric Bagaric with a 6-3, 6-7 (8), 7-6 (6) win to reach the second round, where she took on 10th seed Daria Kasatkina. The American led by a break twice in the first set and even held a set point when she served for it at 5-3.
However, Kasatkina managed to claw her way back to make it 5-5. She served at 6-5 to force a tie-break but Stearns snagged another break to claim the set. The American raced to a 4-0 lead in the second set, and while she squandered a part of it, she remained in front until the end to win the match 7-5, 6-2.
Andreeva secured a 6-2, 6-3 win over Emina Bektas to set up a highly-anticipated second-round showdown against former World No. 1 Victoria Azarenka. The match started with five straight breaks of serve, with the teen gaining the upper hand to go 3-2 up.
Andreeva secured another break towards the end of the set to clinch the opener. Azarenka overcame a break deficit in the second set to capture it and level the proceedings.
The two traded breaks seven times in the decider, and Andreeva ultimately came out on top to lead 6-5. She then stepped up to serve for the match, and while Azarenka saved three match points, the Russian got the job done on her fourth one for a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 win.

Stearns, fresh off a maiden WTA title in Morocco last week, extended her unbeaten run to seven matches after her win over Kasatkina. Andreeva, meanwhile, edged past Azarenka in a late-night thriller that ended way beyond midnight.
Stearns has made the third round of a Major for the first time, while Andreeva has reached this stage in Paris for the second year in a row. The latter was eliminated by Coco Gauff last year and will need to get past another American if she intends to make the fourth round.
Andreeva has stepped up at the Majors since making her debut last year. She has further improved her game by hiring Conchita Martinez as her coach. Her record at the Majors is miles better than Stearns. Even though the American is on a roll at the moment, the teenager will be favored to make it through this clash.
