French Open: Roger Federer romps to the third round with convincing win

Roger Federer in action against Marcel Granollers

Former World No. 1 Roger Federer cruised to the third round courtesy a straight-sets victory over Spaniard Marcel Granollers. The Swiss maestro made short work of the Spaniard, taking the round 2 match 6-2, 7-6 (1), 6-3.

The 2009 French Open Champion had a smooth sailing in the first set playing at the Court Suzanne Lenglen as Kei Nishikori, who was playing Thomaz Bellucci, was given the centre court. Federer took the opening set 6-2.

However, the second seed had a rocky time in the second set as Granollers took a 4-2 lead and was close to making it 5-2 before Federer staged a comeback to tie the set at 6-6. The tie-breaker was a no-contest as Federer took the second set in 50 minutes.

The third was as straight-forward as the first and the 17-time Grand Slam champion looked in full control as he romped to a straight sets victory to set up a clash with Damir Dzumhur.

I wasn’t nervous: Federer

After the match, Federer gave his opinion on the match saying he was playing very well and was not nervous.

“I think I was actually playing very well,” said Federer. “I wasn't nervous really. I think things went well for me for the first couple of sets. I think I was in control. Even though I was down a break in the second set, I still felt the match was in my racquet. And when you feel that way, obviously you're always going to feel more confident, more comfortable, not nervous.

“But the thing you don't want to do is you want to start off badly sets, and that's what happened in the beginning of the third. I played a horrible game. It was just very disappointing and frustrating. But after that, I must say, it was probably my best spell of the match right after that. I was offensive. I was successful at net. So overall, I was very, very pleased.”

On being asked how he would approach the match against Dzumhur, the 33-year old admitted that he has never seen the Bosnian play and said that it will be “an interesting match-up”.

Federer revealed, “I don't know him very well. I might even go so far to say I have actually almost never seen him play maybe before. [It will be an] interesting match-up clearly, and [a] different approach to the match I played today.”
