Goffin reaches Madrid second round in straight sets
David Goffin booked his place in the second round of the Madrid Open with a 6-2 7-6 (10-8) victory over Karen Khachanov on Sunday.
After sharing the opening four games, the Belgian ninth seed reeled off four in succession to clinch the first set in just 34 minutes.
Goffin was made to work harder in the second and had to come from a break down to force the tie-break.
The 26-year-old survived break point at 4-4 and squandered two match points before eventually wrapping up the win in the shoot-out.

In the day's only other first-round match, Fabio Fognini overcame Joao Sousa 6-4 6-4, a break in each set enough to see the world number 29 through.
The result earns Fognini a second-round clash with Rafael Nadal, who suffered an early loss to the Italian at the US Open in 2015.
