Alexander Zverev vs Zhizhen Zhang preview

Top-seed Alexander Zverev of Germany will face eighth-seed Zhizhen Zhang of China in the quarter-final of the Hamburg European Open on Friday, July 19.

Zverev, who had a successful clay-court season by winning the Italian Open title and reaching the final of the French Open, will look to continue his good run on the surface on his home soil. The 26-year-old German beat Jesper De Jong 6-2 6-2 in the first round and then prevailed over Hugo Gaston of France 4-6 6-2 7-5 in the second.

On the other hand, Zhang has won both his matches with relative ease so far in the tournament. He beat Thiago Seyboth-Wild of Brazil 7-6 (8-6) 6-0 in the first round and then prevailed over Flavio Cobolli 6-1 7-6 (5) in the next round. The Chinese has looked in good touch so far and will be difficult to overcome.

Alexander Zverev vs Zhizhen Zhang prediction

Zverev is undoubtedly the more fancied player of the two. Moreover, his form on clay has also been quite good of late. The big German’s powerful serve and backhand could prove to be more than a handful for any opponent.

However, Zhang is no pushover either and should be able to hold his own against Zverev with his powerful groundstrokes. Still, the German's superior serve should give him a distinct advantage over the Chinese.

Zhang should be able to make a match of it and stretch Zverev well enough. The Chinese might also be able to take a set off the German. However, buoyed by home support, Zverev should have too much quality to prevail in the end. The German remains the favorite to win the title on his home soil.

Pick: Zverev to win in three sets.
