Alexander Zverev and Arthur Fils are squaring off for the 2024 Hamburg European Open men's singles final title on Sunday, July 21. The two players will take the centre court at the Am Rothenbaum arena once the men's doubles final concludes.
Zverev is eyeing a second successive title in Hamburg this year, whereas Fils fights for his career's first ATP 500 trophy. Fils' campaign in Hamburg began on an unpleasant note as he lost his first set 5-7 of the tournament to Spain's Jaume Munar in the opening round, however, he hasn't looked back since then.
The Frenchman defeated Munar by claiming the following two sets 6,3, 6-1 to advance. He met Serbia's Laslo Djere in the second round and registered a 7-6(3), 6-2 victory with three break points.
He received a walkover against Denmark's Holger Rune (2) while leading 6-4, 4-1 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, he beat third seed Sebastian Baez from Argentina. He smashed six aces and broke Baez's serve four times to close the match at 6-2, 6-2.
Zverev, on the other hand, had an impressive start to his title defense as he overcame Dutchman Jesper de Jong 6-2, 6-2. He lost the first set to Huga Gatson from France in the second-round effort but staged a comeback to win 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.
The German defeated China's Zhang Zhizhen 6-4, 6-3 in the quarterfinals and downed Spain's Pedro Martinez 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinals.

Zverev is undefeated against Fils in the two matches they have played against each other on tour thus far. He first defeated Fils 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinals en route to lifting the Hamburg title in 2023.
The two most recently met in the quarterfinals of the Halle Open in June this year. Fils managed to claim the first set of that match but Zverev came from behind to close it at 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-4 to take a 2-0 lead in the head-to-head.

Both Zverev and Fils have dropped only one set each in their respective campaigns at the 2024 Hamburg European Open thus far. The two haven't looked vulnerable while facing break points over the last few days.
In total, the first seed's serve has been challenged 16 times in different rounds and has saved it on 12 of those occasions. Similarly, Fils has faced 13 break points and saved 10.
Hence, both players look equipped to soak pressure and find their way out of crunch situations. Zverev, however, appears to be more seasoned on the clay, and with the 2024 Italian Open title already in his bag and the head-to-head record in his favor, he is tipped to beat Fils in Sunday's final at Hamburg.
The German will thus become only the fifth man to successfully defend his title at the tournament in the Open Era.
