Second seed Holger Rune will face qualifier Marco Trungelliti in the second round of the Hamburg European Open 2024 on Thursday (July 18).
Rune was up against World No. 4 Fabian Marozsan in the first round. Both sets played out in the same way, with the young Dane securing an early break to take the lead. While he closed out the first set with ease, that wasn't the case in the second set.
Rune held a couple of match points on Marozsan's serve at 5-3 in the second set but the latter fended them off for a hold of serve. That only delayed the inevitable in the end as the 21-year-old served out the match in the following game for a 6-4, 6-4 victory.
Trungelliti, meanwhile, fought back from a set down to beat Marko Topo in the first qualifying round. He defeated Aziz Dougaz in straight sets to book his place in the Hamburg main draw, where he faced Sebastian Ofner in the first round.
Trungelliti erased five break points in the very first game of the match to hold serve. He broke Ofner's serve in the very next game to go 2-0 up, and backed it up with another service hold to make it 3-0.
The 34-year-old didn't relinquish his lead and went on to capture the set. He led 4-3 in the second set when Ofner chose to retire due to an injury, thus sending him into the next round.

Marozsan can be a difficult opponent to play against but Rune dealt with him without any hassle. He saved all four break points that he faced, won an impressive 89 percent of his first-serve points, and hit 23 winners against 11 unforced errors.
Ofner's mid-match retirement gave Trungelliti his third main-draw win of the season. After not winning any tour-level matches the last two years, the Argentine has done well to score some much needed victories on the ATP tour.
Trungelliti will be a massive underdog against Rune. However, the former beat a top-30 player earlier this year as he ousted World No. 22 Nicolas Jarry in the second round of the Barcelona Open. If he channels that same level, then he could give the Dane a tough time, or else it is going to be another easy win for the 21-year-old.
