After months of anticipation, the 2024 US Open is in full swing on the main tour. Defending champions Coco Gauff and Novak Djokovic started their campaigns with confident wins in the first round. Their rivals Iga Swiatek and Carlos Alcaraz also got off to a perfect start in New York.
Five popular tennis couples are participating in the US Open this year. While most of the couples began on a strong note, some faced stiff competiton in the opening bout. On that note, let's take a look at how these couples fared in the first round of the US Open.
#5 Anastasia Potapova and Alexander Shevchenko
World No. 38 Anastasia Potapova and World No. 61 Alexander Shevchenko got off to a successful start in the US Open.
Despite being a set down against Leylah Fernandez, Potapova outclassed the 23rd seed in two hours and 27 minutes, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5. She will square off against Varvara Lepchenko in the next round and has never faced her before.
Alexander Shevchenko, meanwhile, showed his class against Dominic Koepfer in the opening round. The Kazakh registered a hard fought win against the German and outlasted him in four sets, 6-3, 7-5, 5-7, 6-2. He will take on local favorite Frances Tiafoe in the second round.
#4 Elina Svitolina and Gael Monfils
World No. 45 Gael Monfils and World No. 28 Elina Svitolina also kicked off their campaigns in New York with confident wins.
Both players had to recover from a one-set deficit against their Argentine opponents. While Monfils outfoxed Diego Schwartzman in the first round, Svitolina went past Maria Lourdes Carle.
The Frenchman will take on eighth seed Casper Ruud next up with their head-to-head locked at 1-1. Ruud won their most recent encounter in Indian Wells this year.
Svitolina, on the contrary, will face Anhelina Kalinina in the next round. She leads the head-to-head against the Ukranian 2-0, defeating her most recently this year in Dubai.
#3 Katie Boulter and Alex De Minaur
Power couple Katie Boulter and Alex De Minaur meant business in the opening round of the US Open. While Boulter brushed aside Aliaksandra Sasnovich in three sets, Alex De Minuar edged past Marcos Giron in four sets.
Boulter is the 31st seed at the US Open and has had a promising year on the women's tour. She will be hoping to build momentum in the next few rounds and enter the second week in New York. The Brit will take on Jessica Bouzas Maneiro next and is also poised to begin her women's doubles campaign alongside Anna Kalinskaya. The duo will take on the Chinese pair of Saisai Zheng and Xinyu Wang in their opening bout.
Alex De Minaur, meanwhile, put up a near-perfect performance against Marcos Giron in the first round. He defeated the American, 6-3, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 and will lock horns with Otto Virtanen next. The Australian will take on Virtanen for the first time on the men's tour and will be keen to continue his rich vein of form in New York.
#2 Paula Badosa and Stefanos Tsitsipas
Popular couple Paula Badosa and Stefanos Tsitsipas also featured in the main draw of the US Open this year. While Badosa got off to a strong start against Viktorija Golubic, Tsitsipas was stunned by Thanasi Kokkinakis in the first round. The Australian defeated Tsitsipas in four sets, 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. The Greek No. 1 will now take part in the mixed doubles competition alongside Paula Badosa on Wednesday.
Former World No. 2 Paula Badosa continued her scintillating form by outsmarting Viktorija Golubic in straight sets. She will now face Taylor Townsend in the second round and leads the head-to-head against the American 1-0. Badosa defeated her most recently at the Australian Open this year. The Spaniard will be determined to put up a flawless performance against the local favorite again.
#1 Anna Kalinskaya and Jannik Sinner at the US Open
Talented duo Jannik Sinner and Anna Kalinskaya also started their campaigns with wins in the first round. While Sinner made light work of Mackenzie McDonald at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, Kalinskaya cruised past Lauren Davis in her opening bout. She defeated the American in one hour and eight minutes, 6-2, 6-2.
Top seed Sinner will now face Alex Michelsen in the second round and leads the head-to-head against the American 1-0. He defeated Michelsen this month in Cincinnati.
Kalinskaya, on the other hand, will battle it out against Anna Bondar for a place in the last 32. Bondar leads the head-to-head against the Russian 1-0 and outfoxed her most recently in the 2021 Nordea Open. Kalinskaya has chalked up promising results this year and will hope to make a deep run in New York.
