How many of the 7 tennis couples at Wimbledon 2024 survived 2R? Exploring the fortunes of Stefanos Tsitsipas - Paula Badosa and others
The second round singles matches at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships ended on 4 July. Jannik Sinner and Anna Kalinskaya are among the best performers out of the many tennis couples participating in the tournament.
As many as seven tennis couples were part of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships across several categories. Two of them, Liam Broady - Eden Silva, and Alexander Shevchenko - Anastasia Potapova, went out in the first round itself. Five couples made it through to the second, and now let's look at how they performed after the second round of singles matches.
# Katerina Siniakova - Tomas Machac
Czech couple Katerina Siniakova and Tomas Machac have been in a relationship since early 2021. Siniakova was the No. 27 seed in the women's singles draw at the Wimbledon Championships and won her opening-round match against Canadian qualifier Marina Stakusic in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.
The 28-year-old was ousted in the second round by recently crowned Rothesay Classic Birmingham winner Yulia Putintseva 6-0, 4-6, 6-2.
Tomas Machac, unseeded in the men's singles draw, won his first-round match against Belgian qualifier David Goffin in a marathon 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, 7-6 (5). Like Siniakova, he also bowed out in the second round, losing to Roman Safiullin 6-2, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.
The couple is also playing doubles at SW19. Siniakova has paired up with Taylor Townsend and will face Elixame Lechemia and Olivia Gadecki in the first round. Tomas Machac and Zhang Zhizhen lost their opening-round match against Ariel Behar and Adam Pavlasek.
# Alex de Minaur - Katie Boulter
Alex de Minaur and Katie Boulter have been the most successful tennis couple in 2024. They have won two titles each this year and, incredibly, both in the same weeks.
De Minaur is seeded ninth at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships, and has so far not dropped a set. He has beaten Australian lucky loser James Duckworth 7-6 (1), 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4) and Jaume Munar 6-2, 6-2, 7-5. The Aussie will now face Lucas Pouille in the third round.
Katie Boulter was seeded No. 32 in the women's singles draw and looked in great form heading into Wimbledon. She bettered German veteran and former semifinalist Tatjana Maria in the first round 7-6, (6), 7-5 before losing to compatriot Harriet Dart 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (8).
The couple has been together since March 2020. Neither of the two is playing doubles in London.
# Stefanos Tsitsipas - Paula Badosa
Stefanos Tsitsipas and Paula Badosa have been the most visible couple on the tennis tour since they started dating a little over a year ago. At the 2024 Wimbledon Championships, Stefanos Tsitsipas is the No. 11 seed in men's singles.
He began his campaign with a 7-6 (5), 6-4, 7-5 win against Taro Daniel. But the Greek's campaign ended after an upset loss against Emil Ruusuvouri 7-6 (6), 7-6 (10), 3-6, 6-3.
While Tsitsipas' stay at the grass Slam has ended, Paula Badosa is still alive in the tournament. The 93rd-ranked Spaniard, given the main draw spot via protected ranking, has defeated Karolina Muchova 6-3, 6-2 and Brenda Fruthvirtova 6-4, 6-2. She will now face No. 14 seed Daria Kasatkina in the third round.
Stefanos Tsitsipas is playing doubles with his brother Petros, and they are up against No. 11 seed Andres Molteni and Maxime Gonzalez in the first round.
# Elina Svitolina - Gael Monfils
The only married couple in this list, Elina Svitlona and Gael Monfils are also one of two couples still active at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships after the second round. Monfils defeated compatriot and No. 22 seed Adrian Mannarino in the first round 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4, and Swiss veteran Stan Wawrinka 7-6 (5), 6-4, 7-6 (3) in the second. He will now face No. 10 seed Grigor Dimitrov.
Elina Svitolina, who reached her second Wimbledon semifinal last year, is seeded No. 21 this year. The Ukrainian has bettered Magda Linette 7-5, 6-7 (9), 6-3, and Jule Niemeier 6-3, 6-4 and will now face No. 10 seed and last year's runner-up Ons Jabeur.
