Davis Cup: India fall at the final hurdle
It was upto Yuki Bhambri to pull off an incredible comeback win for India that started with a stunning win from the pair of Rohan Bopanna and Leander Paes and an equally impressive win from Somdev Devvarman to keep India in the hunt. However, Bhambri was not able to replicate his teammates’ form as he went down in straight sets, which sealed India’s fate in the Davis Cup.
Too many unforced errors from Bhambri cost India the first set
Filip Krajinovic looked the most composed of the two in this crucial encounter for both nations. The Serb's serve was not troubled by Bhambri in the first set and the Indian's serve was broken once which was sufficient for Krajinovic to take the first set 6-3.
Pressure on both guys to hold serve
The second set saw Bhambri gaining a slight edge when he won a couple of points off Krajinovic's serve near the net to take a 2-1 lead. That advantage did not last long as neither player served well and things evened out at 4-4 before heavy rain suspended play. When the match resumed, it was the Serb who broke right back and saved a break point on his serve to close the set 6-4.
No signs of a fightback from Bhambri
Bhambri served poorly in the first game and handed the advantage to Krajinovic. The Serb served decently and hit a backhand down the line winner to being just two games away from winning the match. But the Indian avoided going two breaks down with fine volleying.
Krajinovic was too good for Bhambri and handed Serbia a 3-2 victory with a superb forehand winner.
The Indians did put up a fight after losing the first two singles on Friday, but it wasn't enough against this young Serbian team.
