Daniil Medvedev vs Alexander Zverev preview
Fifth seed Daniil Medvedev will square off against World No. 14 Alexander Zverev in the fourth round of the 2023 BNP Paribas Open on Tuesday.
Medvedev defeated Brandon Nakashima to make it to the third round, where he faced Ilya Ivashka. The Russian broke his opponent's serve twice to clinch the first set with ease.
Medvedev started the second set by breaking Ivashka's serve, but the latter broke back immediately to level the score. The Belarusian nabbed the decisive break in the eighth game to go 5-3 up and then served out the set in the following game.
Medvedev recovered rather quickly from the second set stumble. He raced to a quick 5-0 lead in the third set and even held three match points on Ivashka's serve, who managed a gutsy hold of serve to make it 5-1.
However, it only delayed the inevitable as the Russian closed out the proceedings in the following game to win 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. He has now made it to the fourth round here for the second time in his career.
Zverev, meanwhile, advanced to the third round with a comfortable straight-sets win over Pedro Cachin. Emil Ruusuvuori stood between him and a spot in the fourth round. The German trailed 3-1 in the opening set, but leveled the score in no time.
Zverev then went on to bag the last three games of the set to claim it. Ruusuvuori responded strongly in the second set as dropped just one game en route to nabbing it.
Zverev jumped to a 3-0 lead in the decider, but Ruusuvuori bagged the next three games to get even. It was a closely contested battle from that point on, but it was the German who raised his level towards the end.
With Ruusuvuori serving to stay in the match at 6-5, Zverev broke his serve to win 7-5, 1-6, 7-5. This marked the third time he has reached the fourth round in the California desert.

Daniil Medvedev vs Alexander Zverev prediction
Both Medvedev and Zverev recovered from a second-set letdown to win their respective third-round matches. However, the latter's level was rather subpar and against a stronger opposition he would've found it quite tough to emerge victorious.
Neither player is too fond of the slow conditions over here, with Medvedev making his displeasure quite vocal following his win over Ivashka. Zverev committed too many cheap errors in the previous round, which if not rectified, could prove to be his undoing in the next round.
Zverev and Medvedev have contested several memorable close matches before. However, with the Russian currently on a 16-match winning streak, he'll be favored to win this encounter.
Pick: Daniil Medvedev to win in three sets.
