Injured Sania Mirza eyes French Open return

What's the story?

Indian Tennis star Sania Mirza is likely to return in action ahead of the all-important French Open in May later this year but she has denied mentioning a date for the comeback. Although she has expressed her willingness to participate in the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games earlier, it is unlikely that she will be match-fit before the Commonwealth Games.

In case you didn't know...

Sania has been out of action since October 2017 after suffering an injury on her right knee which forced her to skip the 2018 Australian Open. The six-time Grand Slam champion said in an interview earlier this month that it will at least take a couple of months for the knee to heal.

The heart of the matter

Sania is going through a tough phase and according to her, every day is a new battle. She added that she will be patiently going through the rehabilitation programme to get fit for the upcoming Grand Slams.

"Right now, I don't really have a time frame for when I would return to the court... No return date is set. Every day is a battle for me. But French Open is in May end. Hopefully, I will be back by then," said the Hyderabad born at a promotional event in New Delhi on Tuesday.

Wha's next

The French Open will start its proceedings on May 27, so there is ample time left for Sania to recover and regain her form before she walks into the court at Roland Garros. The last time she won in Paris was back in 2012 winning the mixed doubles title with Mahesh Bhupathi.

Author's take

The former World No.1 in Women’s doubles is 31 years old now, and this might be the ending years of her career. Though she has suffered a few injuries before and still continued her good run of play, it will be interesting to see how she recovers and whether she gets back her winning touch.
