Italian Open 2019: Daniil Medvedev vs Nick Kyrgios, preview and prediction
Nick Kyrgios made his debut in the claycourt season this year at the Madrid Open, where he lost in the first round to the German Jan-Lennard Struff. At the Italian Open things are even tougher for Kyrgios as his first round opponent is the young Russian Daniil Medvedev.
Medvedev had a great start to the clay season but lost in the first round against Guido Pella at the Madrid Open last week. He will be looking to bounce back in Rome.
Surprisingly, these two players have never played against each other before. This will be their first meeting on the ATP tour, and it promises to send the crowd into a frenzy as both the players have contrasting game styles.
Medvedev has got the game to beat Kyrgios; his backhand is a strong weapon that he will look to direct into Kyrgios' weaker backhand. Moreover, the Russian can even come up with some great drop shots which are particularly effective on clay.
On the other hand, Kyrgios has always maintained that clay is not his favorite surface to play on. But everyone including Kyrgios knows that given his talent, he can play on any surface against any type of player, provided he can control his temperament.
The mental aspect of Kyrgios' game seems to be in check these days. He is looking a bit more composed than he has been earlier, and if he can continue playing his natural game, he can create plenty of problems for the Russian.
The serve and the forehand are the major assets for the Australian, and he will look to mask his backhand as much as possible.
Since this is their first meeting on tour, the result is tough to predict. Medvedev's claycourt form will certainly hold him in good stead., but Kyrgios' unique talent can never be discounted.
Tennis fans are in for a treat as they can witness the talent of Kyrgios going up against the relentless grit of Medvedev in what promises to be a thoroughly entertaining match.
Probability of winning: Daniil Medvedev - 75%, Nick Kyrgios - 25%.
