Jannik Sinner vs Novak Djokovic vs Carlos Alcaraz for year-end World No. 1 after US Open 2024: How secure is the Italian's top spot?
Jannik Sinner has claimed his maiden US Open title by defeating the home favorite Taylor Fritz in the final at Flushing Meadows. The Italian started his year in fine form by winning the Australian Open and has now added another Grand Slam title to his list. This title win in New York has further solidified his position as the World No. 1.
According to the latest ATP rankings, Sinner is currently on 11,180 points and sits atop the table. The Italian has been in a battle for the spot with Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic throughout the season but is now the favorite to end the year as the top-ranked player in men's tennis.
Sinner started the US Open as the top seed and added 2000 points by winning the title. He was further helped by the early exits of both Alcaraz and Djokovic.
Djokovic was the defending champion in New York but suffered a shock defeat in the third round of the US Open. The Serbian was defeated by Alexei Popyrin 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 and ended the year without a Major for the first time since 2017. He was defending 2000 points at the US Open and an early exit cost the Serbian 1900. The 24-time Grand Slam champion has dropped two places and found himself as World No. 4 in the latest ATP rankings (5,560 points).
Similarly, Carlos Alcaraz suffered a second-round exit at the US Open 2024. The Spanish star was the favorite to add to his Wimbledon and French Open titles but lost in straight sets against Botic Van de Zandschulp. His US Open exploits cost him 670 points. He remains at No. 3 in the world rankings with 6,690 points.
After a successful American leg that included wins in the Cincinnati Masters and the US Open, Jannik Sinner is now the favorite to end the year as the World No. 1. The Italian star is 4,490 points clear of third-placed Alcaraz and 5,620 points clear of Novak Djokovic.
After the US Open, the Shanghai Masters 1000 and the Paris Masters 1000 are the two main ATP events before the end of the season. These tournaments will be followed by the ATP Finals where Djokovic is the defending champion. As things stand, Alcaraz and Djokovic will need a miracle to overtake Sinner as the World No. 1.
