Holger Rune vs Alejandro Tabilo preview
Sixth seed Holger Rune will take on Alejandro Tabilo of Chile in the first round of the 2024 Japan Open. The Dane has a 33-19 in 2024 and is yet to win a title. He last played at the Hangzhou Open, where he was the top seed. However, the World No. 14 lost in the first match against Yasutaka Uchiyama in straight sets.
The former World No. 4's form has dwindled of late, as he had a first-round exit at the hands of Brandon Nakashima at the US Open as well. If hard court results are to be considered, the Dane'e best result was reaching the final of the Brisbane International, which he lost to Grigor Dimitrov. He also reached the semifinal at the Mexican Open and the Cincinnati Open, losing to Casper Ruud and Frances Tiafoe respectively.
Tabilo has a 28-22 record in 2024, having won two titles in the year. The Chilean last played at the Laver Cup, losing his singles tie against Dimitrov. He won the Auckland Open as a qualifier, defeating Taro Daniel in the final. He also won the Mallorca Championships winning against Sebastian Ofner in the final.
Barring the title in Auckland, the World No. 22 has struggled on hard courts. The Chilean has had better success on clay, reaching the semifinal of the Italian Open (lost to Alexander Zverev), and reaching the final of the Chile Open, where he lost to Sebastian Baez.

Holger Rune vs Alejandro Tabilo prediction
Rune has had success on hard courts in his career. The Dane has reached five tournament finals on hard courts, winning his biggest career title at the 2022 Paris Masters, defeating Novak Djokovic in the final. However, his recent hard-court form is dubious as he lost to lesser-ranked opponents in the last two events. His second-round loss to Arthur Cazaux at the Australian Open was unexpected as well.
Tabilo is currently on a six-match losing streak on hard courts. The Chilean had first-round exist, at the Cincinnati Open and the US Open and failed to win any of his three matches at the Davis Cup. At the Laver Cup, he gave away a 5-1 advantage in the second set, before losing to Dimitrov.
Both players are not in good form coming into this match. However, with big match experience and being the higher-ranked player, Rune will be the marginal favorite to win the match.
Pick- Rune to win three sets.
