Jo-Wilfred Tsonga pulls out of the 2015 Australian Open

Jo-Wilfred Tsonga

World No.12 Jo-Wilfred Tsonga has withdrawn from the 2015 Australian Open due to an arm injury. The 29-year-old didn't participate in the Hopman Cup in Perth last week and has been having a difficult time recuperating from the injury and has ruled out from participating in the first Grand Slam of the year.

Tsonga confirmed the bad news on Twitter

The Frenchman confirmed the news, saying that he still hadn’t recovered completely and also posted a few pictures on his Twitter account.

“I am still suffering from a forearm inflammation that prevents me being 100% in a competition," Tsonga said.

He further added that he still required 3 more weeks to recover fully from the bruise, which means that he would have to skip the Australian Open, which starts of 19th January.

“Then I’m going to receive over 3 weeks all the needed treatments to be able to be back on track in the best conditions. Thanks to all of you for your numerous messages and for the support you are giving me,” he added.

The withdrawal, however, could be good news for Great Britain’s James Ward, who can be called up to replace Tsonga in the main draw of the Grand Slam. The 27-year-old is currently ranked 101 in the world and is just one ranking point away from entering into the top-100 of the rankings.

He is set to be part of the qualifying round at Melbourne Park and is the most likely candidate to replace injured players.

Cilic also in doubt

If Tsonga’s pulling out wasn't bad enough news for fans, then World No.9 and 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic has said that he isn't sure of competing in the tournament owing to a right shoulder injury.

"Considering the full recovery and opportunity for practice, it is highly questionable if I will be able to play," The 26-year-old said.
