Juan Martin Del Potro wins Citi Open
Top seeded Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina came back from a set down to beat big serving American John Isner 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 on Sunday in the final of the Citi Open at Washington DC.
Del Potro was playing his first tournament since that epic semifinal match against Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon and pocketed $850,000 for the victory. The Argentine converted 4 of 6 break point opportunities on the Isner serve to win in three sets.
Del Potro began the match on a damp note with his shots missing their mark and in the process making plenty of unforced errors. But he managed to wrest control back in the second set and found his rhythm to level the match at one-set-a-piece.
He was reading the Isner serve better now and continued his momentum into the third set to take the title. Isner had come into this tournament on the back of a victory at Atlanta last Sunday.
With the win, Del Potro’s preparations for the US Open beginning 26th August, look on track as he aims to repeat his title run from 2009 when he beat Roger Federer in a draining 5-setter to win his only Grand Slam so far.
