Dominic Thiem vs Thiago Agustin Tirante preview
Former World No. 3 Dominic Thiem will take on Thiago Agustin Tirante of Argentina in the first round of the 2024 Generali Open. Thiem's form has nosedived since he suffered a wrist injury in 2021. The 2020 US Open champion has already announced that the 2024 season would be his last.
The 2024 season, has been poor for Thiem so far. The Austrian has struggled to win matches this year, often not even qualifying for the main draws of ATP events. He holds a 2-6 win-loss record for the season as far as main-draw matches are concerned.Thiem could not qualify for the main draws of either the French Open or Wimbledon this year.
Thiago Agustin Tirante has mostly played in Challenger events and ATP tournament qualifiers in the 2024 season. The Argentine has won five out of nine main-draw fixtures so far this year.
At the Nordea Open, Tirante made a run to the semifinals before losing to evenntual champion Nuno Borges. During his run in Bastad, the 23-year-old got the first top-10 victory of his career when he defeated top seed and defending champion Andrey Rublev in the second round. He also won against Roberto Carballes Baena another higher-ranked player.

Dominic Thiem vs Thiago Agustin Tirante prediction
Thiem has not been in great form in 2024. However, clay was the surface on which the Austrian had performed well before his injury. He had 10 clay-court titles and made it to two successive finals at Roland Garros in 2018 and 2019, losing to Rafael Nadal. Thiem reached the final of the Austrian Open last year, where he lost to Sebastian Baez.
Tirante is slowly getting a footing on the ATP Tour. His exploits in Bastad suggest that the Argentine is capable of making deep runs at ATP events. Apart from the ATP events, Tirante has also won a challenger event on the clay in Mexico City and reached the final of another in Uruguay.
Given Thiem's struggles and Tirante's recent form on clay, the Argentine has the advantage going in this match. However, Thiem might be able to win a set using his experience of playing on the big stage.
Pick- Thiago Agustin Tirante to win in three sets.
