Amanda Anisimova vs Viktoriya Tomova preview
Amanda Anisimova will square off against Viktoriya Tomova in the second round of the 2024 Korea Open on Thursday, September 19.
Anisimova entered Seoul with a 17-11 match record for the year. She began the season strong by reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open but struggled to maintain that level of play until the North American hardcourt swing.
In Toronto, she reached her first WTA 1000 final, where she went down to Jessica Pegula in a three-set epic. She also made it to the quarterfinals in Washington. She didn't have a long run in the US Open, however, as Zheng Qinwen got the better of her in the first round.
Anisimova began her Korea Open campaign with a dominant 6-3, 7-6 (5) victory, upsetting sixth seed Yulia Putintseva.
Tomova, in contrast, entered Seoul with a 27-26 match record. Her best results so far include a couple of semifinal finishes in Bad Homburg and Morocco. She also reached the quarterfinals in Hobart and Prague.
Tomova last featured at the US Open, where she went down to 29th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova in the first round despite winning the first set. She opened her campaign in Seoul with a topsy-turvy 6-2, 1-6, 6-0 victory over German veteran Tatjana Maria in the first round.

Amanda Anisimova vs Viktoriya Tomova prediction
Amanda Anisimova looked in great form in her opener, showcasing her blistering baseline game coupled with her delicate touch at the net. She excelled in nearly all departments, particularly on the return and the big points.
Viktoriya Tomova also performed well in her first-round match, aside from the second set. She was effective on her second serve and was not hesitant to attack the net.
Anisimova heads into this encounter the slight favorite given her better run of form of late. She's won 8 out of 11 matches since Wimbledon, while Tomova has won 4 out of 10. She's also reached the finals of an event while Tomovo has only made it as far as the semifinals.
The slightly faster courts in Korea should aid Anisimova's powerful game more. A straight-set victory for the American seems likely if Tomova fails to deliver consistent serves and struggles to make early inroads on Anisimova's return. An exciting match is on the cards, nonetheless.
Pick: Anisimova in straight sets.
