Stan Wawrinka def Lukas Rosol 4-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4

That was a struggle and a half! Reigning champion Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland was expected to have the easiest quarter of all the Big Four – but that was not the case today. Up against 59th- ranked Lukas Rosol, Wawrinka immediately dropped the first set, then came back in thundering fashion to take the second 6-1.

The Czech contributed to the match with his mammoth serve as Wawrinka struggled to make up ground in a match he was supposed to have won easily.

Today’s order of play:

Andy Murray [2] vs Radek Stepanek (Q)

World No. 2 and second seed Andy Murray will take on Czech Radek Stepanek today; given Murray’s clay court form and the fact that Stepanek is 37 and not in the best of fitness, it’s looking to be an easy one for the Scot.

Stan Wawrinka [3] vs Lukas Rosol

The Swiss is the reigning champion at Roland Garros, beating Novak Djokovic to the title last year in a thrilling finish. It was his second Grand Slam title win, and Wawrinka will look to repeat his brilliant run of form from 2015.

It looks easy for Wawrinka, but Rosol is no slouch – the 68th ranked player ousted Rafael Nadal from Wimbledon in 2012.

Richard Gasquet [9] vs Thomaz Bellucci

It’s the home Slam for French player Richard Gasquet, and although he is a top 10 seed, has not been in the best of form lately. He has had fair clay court finishes – finishing in the third round at the Madrid Masters and the Italian Open.

Brazilian player Thomaz Bellucci, meanwhile, is on a high. Although he only reached the final 32 at the Italian Open, defeated by eventual finalist Novak Djokovic, Bellucci managed to bagel the Serb in the first set, an achievement for any player, even in the top 10.
