Following a first-round bye, Cameron Norrie will commence his Lyon Open title defense in the second round against David Goffin on Wednesday.

Norrie lost his opener at the Monte-Carlo Masters against Francisco Cerundolo in straight sets to begin his clay swing on a damp note. He then made it to third round of the Barcelona Open and the Madrid Open, going down to Lorenzo Musetti and Zhizhen Zhang, respectively.

Norrie's best result came at the Italian Open, where he reached the fourth round. Up against defending champion Novak Djokovic, the Brit tried his best but was unable to get the better of the 22-time Major winner.

Goffin faced qualifier Alvaro Lopez San Martin in the first round there. The Belgian dominated the opening set, dropping just one game to clinch it in a decisive manner.

The second set was slightly more competitive, but Lopez San Martin proved to be no match for the veteran. An early break of serve helped Goffin build up a 3-0 lead. He kept his nose in front until the end of the proceedings to win the match 6-1, 6-3.

Goffin made light work of Lopez San Martin in the previous round. He conjured up 17 break-point chances throughout the match, successfully converting four of them. His serve was a little wobbly as he managed to land just 38% of his first serves in play.

Despite that, Goffin managed to defend his serve well as he won 76% of his first-serve points. While it was enough to deal with Lopez San Martin, the Belgian will need to raise his level going forward.

Lyon has proved to be a happy hunting ground for Norrie. He was the runner-up there in 2021 and claimed the title last year. The Brit has some momentum on his side now after a slow start to his clay season.

Norrie's counterpunching abilities work wonders on the red dirt. It's tough to outlast him in long rallies as he's eventually able to swing the point in his favor. While the Brit's previous encounter aganst Goffin was a five-set thriller at Wimbledon, the latter's form has taken a severe hit since then.

Goffin has just six wins at the ATP level this season. The last time he won consecutive matches on the main tour this year was back in January. Based on their respective forms, Norrie will be the favorite to come out on top.

Pick: Cameron Norrie to win in straight sets.
