Eighth seed Hubert Hurkacz will take on Daniel Altmaier in the third round of the 2024 Madrid Open on Sunday.

Following a first-round bye, Hurkacz faced Jack Draper in the second round. The Pole hardly broke a sweat in the first set as he gave away just one game en route to claiming it.

Draper gave a better account of himself in the next set but it wasn't enough. Hurkacz broke the Brit's serve in the 11th game, after which he served out the match with ease for a 6-1, 7-5 win.

Altmaier defeated home favorite Martin Landaluce 6-1, 7-5 to book a second-round date against 31st seed Arthur Fils. The German raced to a 5-1 lead in the first set thanks to a double break.

However, Altmaier failed to close out the set on his first go as Fils broke his serve. It wasn't the start of a comeback as the German broke back immediately to take the set. He continued to dictate the play in the second set and bagged the last three games of the match for a 6-2, 6-3 victory.

Hurkacz began his campaign here on an impressive note as he put on a solid display of tennis against Draper. He hit nine aces and won 84 percent of his first serve points. He finished the match with a total of 30 winners against 11 unforced errors.

Altmaier, who reached his maiden Masters 1000 quarterfinal in Madrid last year, is on track to do so yet again. He's halfway there already after his routine wins over Landaluce and Fils.

Most of Altmaier's best career results have been on clay. Three of his four wins over top-10 players have also come on the surface. Hurkacz has slowly improved his results on clay as well and captured his first title on the surface a few weeks ago at the Estoril Open.

Given that clay is Altmaier's preferred surface, he could put Hurkacz in a spot of bother. However, the latter could be tough to beat in these conditions, especially if he has another good day on serve. The Pole will be backed to make it through this clash.

Pick: Hubert Hurkacz to win in three sets.
