Martina Hingis set to return to Switzerland's Fed Cup team
Fresh from her Miami Open doubles win with Sania Mirza, Martina Hingis is set to make a remarkable comeback into Switzerland's Fed Cup team. She is scheduled to play the World Group play-off tie against Poland in Zielona Gora on April 18-19 after being called up by captain Heinz Guenthardt.
The 34-year-old’s last appearance in Fed Cup was 17 years ago, when the team entered their first and only final so far. The team lost 2-3 to Spain in Geneva.
If the 5-time Grand Slam singles champion harbours any hopes of playing the mixed doubles at the Rio Olympics next year, then she will certainly need to compete in the women’s team competition, before the 2016 Rio Olympics in order to have sufficient points to play the quadrennial games.
Hingis announced her retirement for the second time in 2007 and six years later, made a sterling comeback to take part in doubles competition.
She has had a brilliant start to 2015. Hingis won the Australian Open mixed doubles title partnering Leander Paes. She also clinched the Indian Wells and Miami Open trophies teaming up with Sania Mirza.
The other members of the Switzerland team for the play-off are Timea Bacsinszky, Viktorija Golubic and Stefanie Voegele.
