Andrey Rublev vs Lorenzo Sonego preview
Top seed Andrey Rublev is set to begin his 2024 Moselle Open campaign with a second-round match against Lorenzo Sonego on Tuesday, November 5.
Rublev enters the tournament in a race to secure his spot in the ATP World Tour Finals for the fifth consecutive year. Currently trailing 8th-placed Alex de Minaur by 25 points, he needs to reach the final and possibly win the title to guarantee his place at the year-end event.
Rublev has so far captured titles in Hong Kong and Madrid and reached the final in Montreal this season. However, since Montreal, he has not progressed past the quarterfinals in any tournament. His most recent setback came at the Paris Masters, where he suffered a first-round loss to Francisco Cerundolo, hurting his qualification bid.
Lorenzo Sonego has also endured an inconsistent season. His highlight was his title run at Winston-Salem, where he won the crown without dropping a set. He also reached the quarterfinals in Umag but has struggled to string together consecutive wins elsewhere.
Sonego's last appearance was at the Paris Masters, where he qualified for the main draw but fell to Nicolas Jarry in the first round. He began his Moselle Open campaign this week with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over local qualifier Gregoire Barrere in the first round.

Andrey Rublev vs Lorenzo Sonego prediction
Andrey Rublev heads into the 2024 Moselle Open with a season record of 42-23, including a 31-15 tally on hard courts and 5-4 indoors. Lorenzo Sonego holds a 20-28 season record, with a 10-17 performance on hard courts and 2-4 indoors. Rublev has a stronger career record indoors, with a win rate of 0.623 and six titles compared to Sonego’s 0.526 and one title.
Neither player has shown strong form recently. Rublev has a 3-3 record since the start of the indoor hardcourt season in Stockholm and is 5-5 when including the Asian hardcourt swing. Sonego’s recent record is similarly inconsistent, standing at 2-3 since Stockholm and 2-6 since Chengdu.
Sonego looked solid in his opening match at Moselle, winning 71% of his first-serve points, hitting 7 aces, converting 3 of 6 break-point opportunities, and tallying 27 winners. He leads Rublev in their overall head-to-head and reached the quarterfinals at this tournament last year, giving him confidence heading into the clash.
Rublev, however, won their only prior indoor meeting and will aim for a decisive victory to bolster his bid for an ATP World Tour Finals spot. Despite his recent dip in form, his superior season record and indoor performance make him the favorite to advance.
Pick: Rublev to win in straight sets.
