Preview: Mirza/Hingis to play Dellacqua/Shvedova for women's doubles title at US Open
Top doubles seeds Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis will play Australia’s Casey Dellacqua and her partner Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan in the finals of the US Open women’s doubles event.
The World No. 1s will be looking to take a second consecutive Grand Slam win following their title victory at Wimbledon earlier this year over the Russian pair of Ekaterina Markova and Elena Vesnina 5-7, 7-6(4), 7-5.
The two pairs playing tonight have only met once before, at the quarter-finals of Wimbledon earlier this year, 7-5, 6-3. This will be the firs time they are playing each other on a hard surface, and both sets of partners have been in stellar form coming in to the event.
Hingis already has one title at this year’s US Open, winning the mixed doubles title with India’s Leander Paes on Friday. She also took the mixed doubles title with Paes at Wimbledon this year, and the former World No. 1 will look to take her fourth title in two Grand Slams tonight. At the Canadian Open earlier this year, which is also played on a hard surface, the pair reached the semi-finals of the tournament before losing to the pair of Caroline Garcia and Katarina Srebotnik.
Dellacqua and Shvedova are seeded 4th, and every opponent they faced in the tournament was either unseeded, or lower seeded than them, so tonight’s match will be a challenge, especially considering the form the Indo-Swiss pair have been in.
Mirza and Hingis come into the finals without having dropped a set throughout their run at the tournament; every match they have played has been finished in two sets.
Prediction: The top-seeded pair of Mirza and Hingis to win comfortably.
