Defending champion Stefanos Tsitsipas will take on Laslo Djere in the third round of the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters on Thursday.
After a strong start to the year in which he reached the semifinals of the Australian Open and Acapulco, and the final in Rotterdam, Tsitsipas has gone off the boil. The Greek lost in the third round of the Indian Wells Open and the fourth round in Miami.
After a first-round bye in Monte-Carlo, Tsitsipas commenced his title defense against 2019 champion Fabio Fognini. The World No. 5 made a statement, brushing aside the Italian 6-3, 6-0.

Laslo Djere has also struggled for consistency this season. After reaching the quarterfinals in his first tournament of the year in Adelaide, the Serb managed just one win in his next six tournaments. However, he bounced back at the Grand Prix Hassan, notching up his best performance of the season by reaching the semifinals.
He scored his first-ever victory at the Monte-Carlo Masters by defeating Maxime Cressy in the opening round in three sets. The Serb then defeated 16th seed Lorenzo Sonego 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the third round of a Masters 1000 tournament for the third time in his career and the first time since 2019.

However, Djere is a dangerous player on clay. Both of his wins over top-10 players have come on this surface and his best results have also been on the red dirt (titles in Rio and Sardegna and third round at Roland Garros).

Djere was tested in the opening round against Cressy and faced some resistance in the second round against Lorenzo Sonego as well. The Serb led 5-1 in the opening set but lost the next three games. If he squanders such opportunities against Tsitsipas, he might find himself heading for another early exit.
Tsitsipas, who has developed into a fine claycourter himself, played quite well in his opening match against Fognini. He adapted well to the chilly and windy conditions in Monte-Carlo and secured a commanding win.
The Greek was able to confound the Italian with the angles he created off both wings. His serve was also on point for the majority of the contest.
Djere could trouble the Greek with his consistent shot-making and defensive skills, but the defending champion is formidable on clay and should be able to advance.
