Rafael Nadal to undergo surgery and will miss rest of the season

Rafael Nadal pulls out of the Paris Masters and the World Tour Finals

Rafa to undergo appendix surgery

Rafael Nadal has pulled out of the Paris Masters as well as the ATP World Tour Finals to be held in London as he is going to have his appendix surgery done on November 3rd. Nadal made this decision after his shock loss to 17-year-old Croatian Borna Coric in the quarter-finals of the Basel Open.

Nadal has been suffering from Appendicitis for a long time now and has decided to treat it by undergoing surgery.

“It’s the day to say goodbye for the season,” Nadal said after the loss. “I’m not going to play Paris and London. I am not competitive enough to do that.”

Before undergoing surgery on his appendix, Nadal will receive treatment for a back issue that has bothered him since the Australian Open, where he lost to Stan Wawrinka.

“I need to work on my back a lot,” said Nadal. “Since Australia I’m not 100% recovered. That needs time and a period of five weeks to work hard again. I need to try to fix all the things that bother me. I’m going to work for one month in December and I will be back at the start of 2015.”

The 9th position in the rankings will now qualify for the finals. Nadal’s withdrawal is a huge boost for Britain’s No. 1 Andy Murray who is currently 8th in the live rankings, while David Ferrer is 9th. Both of them will face off in the semi-finals of the Valencia Open today.

Tomas Berdych’s poor form might lead to Andy Murray taking over the 7th position soon, and Ferrer taking over the 8th position. Milos Raonic, even though has had a string of poor results is in the race to qualify for the finals. He sits at no. 10 now. He will have to perform well at the Paris Masters if he wants to qualify for the finals. Grigor Dimitrov has an outside chance to qualify as he is in 11th position. He, too will have to perform really well next week and will have to hope for some of the others to slip up in their matches.
