"48 hours have passed, still haven't found it" - Beatriz Haddad Maia laments airline mishap, left without her suitcase ahead of Paris Olympics 2024
Beatriz Haddad Maia is all set to make her Olympic debut at the 2024 Summer Games in Paris. But all has not gone according to plan for the Brazilian after her airlines misplaced her luggage ahead of the tournament.
Beatriz Haddad Maia will cap off a fantastic last 12 months on the WTA Tour with her maiden campaign at the Summer Olympics in Paris, France. The tournament kicks off on July 26, with tennis action beginning on July 27. The Brazilian No. 1 has arrived at the French capital ahead of the Games.
However, her luggage has not. Beatriz Haddad Maia traveled from Brazil to France via Swiss International Airlines, but the airline allegedly did not transport her luggage. The 28-year-old took to Instagram to shed light on the situation and slammed Swiss International Airlines for being unable to find her suitcase for almost 48 hours.
Haddad Maia added that her Apple AirTag revealed that the suitcase is still at the Guarulhos Airport in Sao Paolo, Brazil, and nothing is being done to resolve the issue. She thanked Brazil's Olympic Committee, COB (ComitĂȘ OlĂmpico do Brasil), for their support.
"Almost 48 hours have passed and Swiss Airlines still hasn't found my suitcase. My air tag shows that the suitcase is still at the Guarulhos airport, but so far nothing has resolved the case. Need a suitcase for the Olympics! Thanks COB for the support provided. #SWISS ARILINES WHERE IS MY LUGGAGE FOR THE OLYMPIC GAMES?" Haddad Maia wrote in an Instagram Story.
Beatriz Haddad Maia to compete in singles and doubles at Paris Olympics 2024
Beatriz Haddad Maia will be joined by Thiago Monteiro, Thiago Seyboth Wild, Luisa Stefani, and Laura Pigossi in Brazil's tennis contingent at the 2024 Paris Olympics. She will compete in the women's singles category as the No. 14 seed and will be joined by Laura Pigossi in the main draw, which features Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, and Elena Rybakina as the top three seeds.
Haddad Maia will also compete in the women's doubles as the sixth seed alongside Luisa Stefani. The duo has most recently played together at the Abu Dhabi Open as the second seed and reached the semifinals after winning two matches. Haddad Maia won her only doubles title in 2024 at the Adelaide International with Taylor Townsend.
She is hoping for a good showing at the Paris Olympics, given her history on clay courts. She reached her maiden Grand Slam semifinal at the 2023 Roland Garros and played quarterfinals at the 2024 Madrid Open. The former World No. 10 also won the doubles title at Madrid in 2023.
