"Always continues to amaze me" - Andre Agassi celebrates 'friend' Novak Djokovic joining him in history books after Paris Olympics gold medal
Novak Djokovic won gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Sunday, August 4, to complete a Career Golden Slam. He joined an elite group of players after this achievement, which also includes US legend Andre Agassi.
The American congratulated Djokovic on becoming only the fifth player to win all four Major titles and the Olympic gold medal:
"The Career Golden Slam... what you continue to accomplish in our sport has long since stopped surprising me, but always continues to amaze me. Congratulations, my friend!!"
Djokovic took on Carlos Alcaraz in the gold medal match at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Both were in outstanding form, reaching the final without dropping a set. They were also the finalists at Wimbledon a few weeks ago.
This was the pair's seventh encounter on tour, with their head-to-head tied on 3-3 before the match. This was the fourth time they met in a final, with Alcaraz winning two recent finals, which were played at SW19. However, the 24-time Grand Slam champion wasn't to be denied again.
The tightly contested final saw both players earn multiple break points across 2 hours and 50 minutes. However, they failed to convert any. However, Djokovic raised his level in both tiebreakers to win the gold medal 7-6(2), 7-6(3).
The 37-year-old took to his Instagram to post an image of himself wearing the gold medal around his neck. He captioned the post:
"Dear Serbia, We did it. Love, Nole ❤️🥇"
This was Djokovic's fifth Olympic participation. He had reached the semifinals thrice before but faced defeat on all occasions. Although Djokovic had not won a title so far this year, he came out of the Olympics with the medal that had eluded him for over a decade.
Agassi's congratulations came in a comment on Novak's Instagram post.

In his post-match interview, Djokovic was grateful for his triumphs.
"I’m super grateful for the blessing to win a historic gold medal for my country. To complete the golden slam. To complete all the records,” he said.
The 37-year-old won Serbia's eighth Olympic gold medal, overall, and second gold medal at the ongoing Games. Serbia's only other medal in tennis was also won by Djokovic - bronze at the 2008 Beijing Games.
