American No. 1 Taylor Fritz stuns Alexander Zverev to pull off his best win at a Grand Slam, reaches 2nd Wimbledon QF

Taylor Fritz pulled off his best win at a Grand Slam yet, beating World No. 4 Alexander Zverev in the fourth round of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships. The American has now reached his second quarterfinal at SW19, having previously done so in 2022.

Fritz lost the opener on the day, losing the first set 4-6. The second went to the German in a tiebreaker, as he prevailed 7-6(4) to move within a set of his maiden quarterfinal appearance at the Grass Major. However, the World No. 12 began his comeback after that, taking the third set 6-4.

In a reversal of fortunes, Fritz then took the fourth in a tiebreaker, 7-6(3), to force the decider. With all to play for in the final set, the 26-year-old put his best foot forward, breaking early and then consolidating for a 6-3 win. Overall, the match lasted three hours and 30 minutes on Center Court.

Fritz had beaten a top 10 player at a Grand Slam previously only once, defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Australian Open earlier this year in the fourth round. The win also saw him reach his fourth ever Major quarterfinal, following the 2022 Wimbledon Championships, the 2023 US Open and the 2024 Australian Open.

Following his win over Alexander Zverev, Taylor Fritz will next take on Lorenzo Musetti in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships. The Italian came through the fourth round in four sets, beating lucky loser Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.

The duo have met thrice on the ATP Tour so far, with the American leading 2-1 in the head-to-head. However, Musetti won their most recent encounter at the 2024 Monte-Carlo Masters. Fritz and Musetti have met once at Wimbledon before, when Fritz prevailed in three sets in the 2022 edition.

The winner of the clash is likely to face off against World No. 2 and 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in the semifinals. Meanwhile, World No. 1 Jannik Sinner and World No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz are the favorites to reach the final from the top half of the draw.

A win over Musetti will see Taylor Fritz reach his maiden Grand Slam semifinal. The Italian, on the other hand, has reached his maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal now, and will be hoping to keep his magical run going when he faces the World No. 14 on Wednesday.
