"Andre Agassi gave me some advice... we've been texting" - Marcos Giron on unexpected relationship with the tennis legend after their first meeting
Following his maiden ATP singles title at the Hall of Fame Open in Newport on Sunday, July 21, Marcos Giron opened up about his relationship with former player Andre Agassi. Giron said his bonding with the eight-time Grand Slam winner was unexpected and that working with the tennis legend was an "incredible experience."
Giron, 30, was the second seed at the 2024 Hall of Fame Open. Along with the ATP 250 event, Newport also hosted the International Tennis Hall of Fame weekend, where Leander Paes, Vijay Amritraj, and Richard Evans were inducted into the elite group.
On Sunday, July 21, Giron was up against compatriot and third-seed Alex Michelsen in the final. The 2014 NCAA Division I Champion won the match 6-7(4), 6-3, 7-5 to earn his first ATP Tour title.
During Marcos Giron's quarterfinal against Alex Bolt, Andre Agassi was seen sitting in the front row. The soon-to-be 31-year-old was asked about him during his on-court interview, and Giron had only kind words for the tennis legend.
Later, in an interview with ATPTour.com, Giron revealed how and where he first met Agassi.
"Our relationship came out of nowhere, that’s the truth. I met him in San Diego four years ago through a training group, and I remember being completely excited to see him on the court," Giron said (via Punto de Break).
He added that compatriot Sebastian Korda was lined up to work with Agassi in 2020 and they were looking for players to accompany him to Las Vegas, where Giron grew closer to Agassi.
"I spent a few days there, we talked a bit and it was an incredible experience. He gave me some advice at the time that was epic for me, and then we’ve been texting and even calling from time to time,” Giron added.
Marcos Giron believes his training in Las Vegas with Andre Agassi helped him extend his career
Marcos Giron heaped praise on Andre Agassi and revealed that the tennis legend always took out time for him.
“Since 2020, he has been tremendously kind to me, he always took his time. That three-day trip to Las Vegas changed my life, I can assure you, at least it changed my vision of the game," Marcos Giron told ATPTour.com.
Further, the 2024 Hall of Fame Open winner believes his trip to Las Vegas and learnings from Andre Agassi have helped him extend his career.
"That trip extended my career for a few years, everything has been different since I have had him as a guide, with his knowledge and his vision," Giron added.
Marcos Giron is the last winner of the tour-level tournament Hall of Fame Open. The tournament will remain on the calendar but will be converted into an ATP Challenger Tour event.
