"Anything can happen" - Jannik Sinner not surprised by Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz's shock US Open 2024 exits

Following Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz’s shock exits, Jannik Sinner is the big favorite to walk away with the 2024 US Open trophy. Djokovic, who had won the titles the two last years running, lost to Alexei Popyrin in the third round. This came just a day after Alcaraz suffered a surprise loss against Botic van de Zandschulp, also in the third round.

Sinner, meanwhile, continued his solid run at the season’s final Slam, coming through in straight sets against Chris O’Connel. In his post-match on-court interview, the 23-year-old was asked about his fellow top seeds falling by the wayside.

Sinner said the surprising results were testament to the unpredictability of the modern game, adding he simply tries to focus on his side of the net.

"As we see, anything can happen in this sport. I try to stay on my side of the net. Taking it day by day. Each opponent is a tough challenge. Trying to enjoy every moment on the court," said Sinner.

Sinner added:

"There have been a couple of upsets. Let’s see what’s coming. I’m happy to still be here and hopefully play as many matches as possible."

With the early exits of both Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner is one of only two remaining former Grand Slam champions in this year’s US Open men’s singles draw, the other being Daniil Medvedev.

Sinner did not have the best of starts to his campaign, losing the very first set he played in New York. He did, however, eventually beat Mackenzie McDonald in four sets 2-6, 6-2, 6-1, 6-2. The top seed followed that performance up with two straight-set wins, over Alex Michelesen and Chris O’Connel.

The Italian will next take on 14th seed and local favorite Tommy Paul for a place in the quarterfinals.
