Apologetic Frances Tiafoe 'disappointed' in himself after expletive-laden outburst against umpire in controversial Shanghai Masters loss

Frances Tiafoe quickly issued an apology after his expletive-ridden outburst at the Shanghai Masters, where the American dropped multiple F-bombs against chair umpire Jimmy Pinoargote following his third-round loss. Tiafoe's rant came about after he was handed a time violation in the tiebreaker of the final set, which he thought was not warranted at the time.

Facing off against Russia's Roman Safiullin, Tiafoe took the opening set 7-5 in Shanghai but lost the next two, going out 7-5, 5-7, 6-7(5). The time violation was awarded to the 13th seed when he and Safiullin were 5-5 in the tiebreaker, which resulted in him lashing out at the umpire while going to shake hands with him.

Fans on social media were quick to call out the two-time US Open semifinalist, however, demanding that he should be stripped of his prize money at the tournament for his behavior and even banned from the ATP Tour for a while. With public opinion so overwhelmingly against him, Frances Tiafoe took to Instagram hours later to apologize for the act.

The 26-year-old proclaimed that he was "disappointed" in himself for the way he behaved, referring to it as unacceptable and blaming the heat of the moment for getting the better of him. The American also apologized to the umpire for his words and promised to not repeat the action in the future.

"I really apologize for the way I acted tonight. That is not who I am and not how I ever want to treat people. I let my frustration in the heat of the moment get the best of me and I'm extremely disappointed with how I handled the situation. That's not acceptable behavior and I want to apologize to the umpire, the tournament, and the fans. I'll be better for y'all," Tiafoe wrote.
