Sabalenka has been among the top three players on the women's tour this year. She made a flawless start to the season by defending her title in Melbourne and then chalked up runner-up finishes in Madrid and Rome. Despite solid performances at both events on clay, she came up shy against Iga Swiatek in the finals.
The Belarusian picked up the pace again in Cincinnati and dominated the singles event to lift her second title of the season. She continued her purple patch in the US Open, clinching her maiden title in New York. Sabalenka overcame Jessica Pegula in straight sets in the finals, 7-5, 7-5.
Zheng Qinwen, meanwhile, has been a breath of fresh air on the women's tour this year. She started the season on a promising note by securing a runner-up finish in Melbourne and then garnered a historic win for China in the Paris Olympics. Against all odds, the youngster clinched a gold medal in the women's singles event by defeating Donna Vekic in the finals 6-2, 6-3.
The 22-year-old has continued her fine form in Wuhan and is through to her third final on tour. She started her campaign by cruising past Jacqueline Cristian and Leylah Fernandez in the first few rounds, after which she outsmarted Jasmine Paolini and Xinyu Wang en route to the finals. Qinwen defeated Wang in straight sets in the last round, 6-3, 6-4.
The Wuhan crowd can expect an engrossing battle between two high-quality players in the finals. Sabalenka, 26, has chalked up 19 wins from her last 20 matches on tour and will be a favorite to come out on top. However, with the local crowd firmly behind Qinwen, the Belarusian will need to bring her A-game to the fore in the finals.
