ATP Race to Turin after Wimbledon: Carlos Alcaraz closes in on Jannik Sinner as Italian remains on top, Novak Djokovic enters top 8

The 2024 Wimbledon Championships concluded on Sunday, July 14. The men's singles final saw Carlos Alcaraz successfully defend the title he won at the SW-19 last year in a rematch of last year's final against Novak Djokovic.

The grass-court major has seen some movement in the ATP Singles Race Rankings for the year-ending ATP Championships in Turin. The top spot, however still belonged to Jannik Sinner. In the quarter-finals, the Italian bowed out of the Championships, losing a five-set thriller against Daniil Medvedev. The World No. 1 got 400 points for his performance and retained his top spot with 6200 points.

Carlos Alcaraz moved from third to second position after his successful title defense at Wimbledon. An influx of 2000 points saw his points tally rise to 5950 points, displacing Alexander Zverev, who slipped to the third position. Zverev secured 200 points for his fourth-round run at the Major, which makes his current points tally stand at 4785.

The most significant entry in the top eight list for the season after Wimbledon is that of Novak Djokovic's. The Serb made his first final appearance of 2024, which earned him 1300 points, taking his season tally to 3160 points. This surge saw the former World No.1 rise in the Race Rankings from 13th to sixth.

Casper Rudd and Daniil Medvedev interchanged their positions at fourth and fifth respectively. The Norwegian could only muster 50 points at Wimbledon as he lost in the second round, which takes his points tally to 3485. The Russian scored 800 points in his semi-final run, taking his points tally to 4000. Other players who maintained their presence in the Top 8 were Alex de Minaur and Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Carlos Alcaraz is not the only player who benefitted at Wimbledon. The American pair of Tommy Paul and Taylor Fritz reached the quarter-finals of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships.

They secured 400 points for their performances, taking Fritz's tally to 2530 points (ninth position), and Paul's tally to 2475 points (10th position). Both are hot on the heels of eighth-placed Stefanos Tsitsipas who is at 2565 points.

Lorenzo Musetti is another player who saw a major shift in the ATP Race rankings. The Italian was not even in the top 20 before Wimbledon. However, the Italian's great run till the semi-finals has helped him earn 800 points which has seen him rise to the 14th position on the rankings.

Andrey Rublev is the only player who fell out of the Top 8 of the ATP Race Rankings after Wimbledon. The Russian was the sixth seed at the Championships but suffered a shock loss against Francisco Comesana in the first round. As a result, he could only add 10 points to his tally, causing his ranking to slip from 8th to 12th.
