ATP Rankings update: Canadian Open champion Alexei Popyrin cracks the top 25, Sebastian Korda makes his top 15 debut
This week's ATP rankings feature a massive jump from the newest Masters 1000 champion, Alexei Popyrin. He claimed his maiden title at the level with his 6-2, 6-4 win over Andrey Rublev in the final of the Canadian Open on Monday evening.
Popyrin's triumph pushed him up by 39 spots to No. 23, surpassing his previous career high of No. 38 by a fair margin. He's the first Australian to win a Masters title since Lleyton Hewitt's victory at the 2003 Indian Wells Masters.
Sebastian Korda's impressive fortnight has resulted in a top-15 debut. He won the Citi Open a couple of weeks ago, his first ATP 500 title, and made the semifinals of the Canadian Open. He moved up three spots to No. 15, with three more Americans right ahead of him.
Taylor Fritz (No. 12), Tommy Paul (No.13), and Ben Shelton (No. 14) lead the American charge along with Korda. Italians continue to move upwards in the ATP rankings as well.
Matteo Arnaldi made the last four of the Canadian Open, and jumped 16 places to crack the top 30 at No. 30. His compatriot Flavio Cobolli is right on his tail and reached a new career peak of No. 31 this week. Their more accomplished countryman - Jannik Sinner, continues to stay atop the rankings.
Jannik Sinner leads the ATP rankings for another week despite failing to defend his Canadian Open title
Jannik Sinner's title defense at the Canadian Open came to an end in the quarterfinals. He dropped 800 points as a result and currently has 8770 points to his name, which is enough to lead the ATP rankings. Novak Djokovic follows him in second place with 8460 points.
While the two are only 310 points apart at the moment, Djokovic has opted not to defend his title in Cincinnati. He will lose 1000 points next week, while Sinner has an opportunity to further increase his lead.
Carlos Alcaraz is up next at No. 3 with 7950 points. He returns to action in Cincinnati this week for the first time since losing the gold medal match against Djokovic at the Paris Olympics. Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev are non-movers at No. 4 and No. 5 respectively.
Rublev, who finished as the runner-up to Popyrin at the Canadian Open, moved up a couple of places to No. 6. His rise pushed Hubert Hurkacz down a spot to No. 7. Casper Ruud and Grigor Dimitrov also moved up a rung each to No. 8 and No. 9 respectively, while Alex de Minaur fell three places to No. 10.
The Australian missed the Canadian Open due to an injury, where he was a finalist last year. He won't be participating in Cincinnati as well and hasn't played a singles match since withdrawing before his quarterfinal match against Djokovic at Wimbledon.
