ATP Rankings update: Jannik Sinner to end the year as No. 1 after his Shanghai Masters win, runner-up Novak Djokovic closes in on an ATP Finals spot
Jannik Sinner is set to end the season atop the ATP rankings in the wake of his victory at the Shanghai Masters. He defeated Novak Djokovic 7-6 (4), 6-3 in the final to claim his seventh title of the season. He also became the first player to tally three consecutive wins over the Serb since Rafael Nadal did the same in 2013.
Sinner improved his points tally to 11,920 with his latest win and ensured the year-end No. 1 ranking for himself with it for the first time. Carlos Alcaraz is way behind him with 7,120 points at No. 2. Alexander Zverev is up next at No. 3 with 6,795 points.
Djokovic's bid for a 100th career title was spoiled by Sinner. Nevertheless, it was a good week for him after a disappointing outing at the US Open, where he crashed out in the third round. Even though he lost in the final, he improved his odds of qualifying for the ATP Finals and added some much-needed points.
Despite adding 650 points to his tally, Djokovic remains steady at No. 4 in this week's ATP rankings with 6,210 points. Daniil Medvedev trails him at No. 5 with 5,530 points. Taylor Fritz's semifinal finish in Shanghai pushed him up a spot to No. 6, and he now has 4,415 points.
Frtiz's gain was Andrey Rublev's loss, who moved down a rung to No. 7 with 4,110 points. Casper Ruud rose a spot to No. 8 and has 3,885 points, while Alex de Minaur moved up two positions to No. 9, and has 3,620 points. Grigor Dimitrov rounds out the region at No. 10 with 3,580 points.
Jack Draper, Tomas Machac among the players to record new career milestones in this week's ATP rankings
Even though he's on a hiatus at present, Jack Draper still rose to a new career high of No. 19 this week due to other players' movement. Tomas Machac, on the other hand, secured a new career milestone for himself with a semifinal appearance in Shanghai, his first at a Masters 1000 tournament.
Machac ousted Alcaraz en route to the last four, where he was beaten by Sinner. He jumped eight spots to No. 25 and made his top 30 debut as well. Czech teen Jakub Mensik toppled two top 10 players to advance to his first Masters quarterfinal in Shanghai.
Mensik's journey eventually came to an end at the hands of Djokovic. Regardless, he's got some more good news as he rose by 14 spots to a new career peak of No. 51 in the latest ATP rankings.
Pedro Martinez (No. 38), Shang Juncheng (No. 49), Alexandre Muller (No. 69), and Zizou Bergs (No. 70) are the other players to rise to a new career high this week.
