ATP rankings Update: Rafael Nadal returns to Top 200 after Bastad run, Matteo Berrettini and Arthur Fils climb after title wins | July 22, 2024
The ATP rankings saw no shift in the top 5 after the conclusion of last week's tournaments. Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz.Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev held on to their respective positions.
Rafael Nadal returned to the top 200 after his run to the finals at the Swedish Open. This was Nadal's 72nd final on the clay. The Spaniard made his first final since his French Open triumph in 2022. Even though he lost to Nuno Borges in straight sets, the former World No. 1 earned 165 points that saw him jump 100 places on the rankings, from 261 to 161.
Matteo Berrettini profited most last week from his triumph at the Swiss Open at Gstaad. The Italian won his ninth career title and second at the tournament by taking down Frenchman Quentin Halys in the final. As a result, Berrettini secured 250 points which saw him jump 32 places on the ATP rankings, from the 82nd to the 50th.
Another player who made decent gains in the last week was Arthur Fils. The Frenchman won his second career title on clay by winning the Hamburg Open, defeating home favorite Alexander Zverev in a tense and controversial final. The win saw Fils gain 475 points. As a result, he improved his ranking by rising from the 28th position to 20th.
The latter half of the top 10 saw some movement after last week. Andrey Rublev and Casper Ruud suffered shock losses at the Swedish Open in Bastad. The two players were the top two seeds in the tournament but lost to Thiago Tirante and Thiago Monteiro respectively in the second round.
Rublev and Ruud played the final of the event last year, with the former winning the contest. As a result, both players dropped points this time due to their early-round exits. While Ruud dropped 105 points, Rublev dropped 240 points. As a result, Rublev slipped to ninth in the rankings and Ruud rose to eighth.
Along with Nadal, Marcos Giron, and Nuno Borges also made gains last week
Other players too made significant gains on the ATP rankings last week. Of them, the most notable gainers were Marcos Giron and Nuno Borges. Giron won the Hall of Fame Open by beating Alex Michelsen in the final to secure his maiden ATP Tour title. This win saw the American player earn 240 points and jump from the 46th to the 38th position on the rankings.
Nuno Borges won his maiden title at the Swedish Open in a remarkable victory over Rafael Nadal in the final. Borges became only the second Portuguese to clinch a win on the ATP Tour, after Joao Sousa. Borges earned 240 points with the win and rose to the 42nd position from the 51st on the ATP Rankings.
Aleksander Vukic and Fabio Fognini were some of the other players who made gains in their rankings last week. Of the players who dropped most in the rankings, India's Sumit Nagal was the prominent name, who fell 12 places. The Indian dropped from 68th to 80th after his second-round loss against Mariano Navone at the Swedish Open.
