"Bravo" - Novak Djokovic congratulates Jannik Sinner on winning his maiden US Open title
Novak Djokovic extended his congratulations to Jannik Sinner for winning his first US Open title. This win marked Sinner's second Grand Slam win of the season and his career, following his triumph at the Australian Open earlier this year, where he defeated Daniil Medvedev in the final to claim the title.
Sinner was the top seed at the New York Major and he kicked off his journey by defeating Americans Mackenzie McDonald and Alex Michelsen in the first and second rounds respectively. He then went on to overcome Christopher O'Connell in the third round and 14th seed Tommy Paul in the fourth.
In the quarterfinals, the World No.1 secured a victory over fifth seed Daniil Medvedev and then advanced to the final after overcoming 25th seed Jack Draper in the semifinals.
In the championship match, Jannik Sinner triumphed over 12th seed Taylor Fritz 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 in two hours and 16 minutes to win the 2024 US Open title.
Following his win, Sinner took to social media to share a photo of himself holding the US Open trophy. In the caption, he expressed happiness at lifting the trophy after two weeks of intense competition. He mentioned that he is planning to spend some quality time with family and friends before returning to the tour.
"Thank you New York!! 🏆 Incredibly special to win my second slam title here after a great two weeks. Thank you for all the support, it means so much . I love this sport and it means everything to me, time to enjoy this moment with my team and my family before we get back to work for the end of the year 👊🏼. The work never stops, we keep pushing," Sinner captioned his Instagram post.
Four-time US Open champion Novak Djokovic commented under Sinner's post, commending the Italian for winning the New York Major.
"Bravoooo Jannik 🏆 👏 🇮🇹 ," Djokovic wrote.
Jannik Sinner after winning US Open 2024: "So many big wins for me this season"
Speaking to the press following his win over Taylor Fritz in the final of the 2024 US Open, Jannik Sinner expressed that the title meant a lot to him and credited his success to his team and close ones.
"This title for me means so much; the last period of my career was not easy. There is my team who supports me every day, the people who are close to me," Sinner said.
Sinner mentioned that he has had many successes this year - winning the Australian Open, ABN AMRO Open, Miami Open, Terra Wortmann Open, Cincinnati Open, and most recently the US Open. He said that playing so well throughout the year gave him the confidence that in turn helped him lift the title at Flushing Meadows.
"So many big wins for me this season, starting off with Australia. Playing so well there gave me confidence. The work never stops. I know I can still improve, as we saw today, a couple of things. But you have to be proud with what you have and the rest you have to work for it. I can't wait for my continued process," he added .
Looking ahead, Jannik Sinner will next compete at the 2024 Shanghai Masters, a tournament where the likes of Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz will also participate. In 2023, Sinner had reached the fourth round at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament before falling to Ben Shelton.
