Brawo Open: Sumit Nagal bows out after losing to Pedro Cachin

Indian tennis player Sumit Nagal’s journey at the Brawo Open came to an end after he lost to Argentina’s Pedro Cachin. The tournament, also known as the ATP 125 Braunschweig Challenger, saw the Indian bow out in the Round of 16 on Wednesday, July 10, in Braunschweig, Germany.

Nagal, ranked 73rd in men’s singles rankings, lost 6-4, 7-5 to 117th-ranked Cachin. It was a disappointing defeat for the second-seeded Nagal, who was among the frontrunners to clinch the title.

Cachin sailed through the first set with ease, but Nagal gave a pretty tough fight in the second set. Nagal, bound for the Paris Olympics, broke Cachin's serve to level the score at 5-5. However, he faltered in the 11th game, losing his serve once again to hand Cachin a 6-5 lead. Cachin seized the opportunity, winning the match in the 12th game.

Not an ideal preparation for the Paris Olympics 2024 for Sumit Nagal

Sumit Nagal started off the Brawo Open with a comprehensive win over Brazilian Felipe Meligeni Alves, defeating him in straight sets (6-1, 6-4) in the Round-of-32 match. With momentum on his side, Nagal was expected to win again and move to the quarter-finals. However, Pedro Cachin had other plans.

It was a rather disappointing result for the Indian tennis star, who is set to feature at the Paris Olympics 2024 later this month. A positive result on the clay court of Brawo Open would have been a boost to Sumit Nagal’s confidence, heading to play at similar courts of Stade Roland Garros in Paris.

Meanwhile, talking about the results of other Indians playing at the Brawo Open, Paris-bound Sriram Balaji, along with his men’s doubles partner Gonzalo Escobar, moved to the quarter-finals. The top-seeded duo defeated the Bolivian duo of Boris Arias and Federico Zeballos comfortably in straight sets (6-3, 6-0) in the Round-of-16 match.

On the other hand, the Indian pair of Vijay Sundar Prashanth and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan lost to Matwé Middelkoop and Denys Molchanov. After winning the first set 6-4, the Indian duo went down 2-6 and 5-10, which brought an end to their Brawo Open journey.
