"Bullsh*t";"Delusional glorification of Coco Gauff" - Fans baffled by Chris Evert's 'dumb' take on Iga Swiatek's US Open chances after American's exit

Chris Evert is facing backlash for her commentary at the 2024 US Open yet again, this time over her remarks on Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff. Given the World No. 1's one-sided rivalry with Gauff, fans were baffled by Evert's suggestion that Swiatek would be sensing a better opportunity to triumph at the New York Major after the 20-year-old's exit.

Swiatek, who has yet to drop a set during her campaign at the New York Major, continued her dominant run with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Liudmila Samsonova to advance to the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Gauff's title defense came to an early end, as she suffered a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 loss to Emma Navarro in the fourth round.

After facing accusations of being "painfully biased" towards Coco Gauff during her commentary on the 20-year-old's defeat, Chris Evert drew the ire of tennis fans once more by suggesting that Iga Swiatek might be more confident in her chances of winning the US Open title after Gauff's exit and Elena Rybakina's withdrawal.

Although Swiatek and Rybakina enjoy a competitive rivalry, with the Kazakh holding a 4-2 lead in their head-to-head record, the World No. 1 dominates her rivalry with Gauff, as evidenced by her 11-1 winning record against the 20-year-old.

"What was even funnier is that she said “you know now that iga has seen that coco and rybakina are out, this has to feel like an opportunity for her”… one of those h2hs is not like the other chrissie," a fan shared.

Given Iga Swiatek's overwhelming dominance over Coco Gauff, fans were perplexed by how Chris Evert had even arrived at the conclusion that Gauff was an obstacle in the Pole's path to the title.

"????? This woman is just saying bulsh*t god 💀," one fan commented.
"LOL! That’s a good one! Like Iga really needs to fear Coco lol. What are these people smoking?" another fan chimed in.
"I swear that’s like the third dumb thing evert said today they werent even in the same half," a fan remarked.
"What opportunity? Their H2H is 11:1. What is Chrissie smoking?" said yet another.

One fan also lambasted Evert for her "delusional glorification" of Gauff, while another argued that Swiatek would've destroyed the 20-year-old if they met in the final.

"Americans’ unhealthy obsession with the delusional glorification of coco needs to be studied because in what universe is she a serious threat to any top 3 players right now," one fan posted.
"Iga would literally double bagel her a**," another fan wrote.
"🤦‍♀️ like Coco could be a threat for Iga 🤡😅," said another.

Following her win over Liudmila Samsonova, Iga Swiatek will face sixth seed Jessica Pegula in a highly anticipated quarterfinal clash at the 2024 US Open. Pegula defeated Diana Shnaider 6-4, 6-2 to book her place against the World No. 1.

Swiatek has emerged victorious in six of her nine encounters against the American, including a dominant 6-1, 6-0 victory in their most recent meeting in the 2023 WTA Finals final.

If Iga Swiatek triumphs over Jessica Pegula, she will face the winner of the match between Beatriz Haddad Maia and Karolina Muchova in the semifinals. The Pole is aiming to clinch her second US Open title following her triumphant run in 2022, while Pegula is on the hunt for her maiden Grand Slam trophy.
