Canadian Open 2024 Day 1: Women's singles predictions ft. Bianca Andreescu vs Lesia Tsurenko, Anna Kalinskaya vs Louisa Chirico
The 2024 Canadian Open is slated to begin on Tuesday, August 6. Many of the top players will be seen in action on both the men's and women's sides to kickstart the North American hardcourt phase of the year.
On the women's side, local favorite and former Grand Slam champion Bianca Andreescu will kickstart her campaign on the first day. The Canadian has slowly started to come back on the tour from injury and will look to build up towards the US Open, starting later this month.
Among the top 10 seeds, the top eight have all received byes in the first round. The one player from the top 10 seeds who will be in action on Tuesday is 10th-seeded Anna Kalinskaya who will start her tournament against Louisa Chirico.
Here's a look at some of the women's singles matches scheduled on Day One of the Canadian Open.
Predictions for women's singles matches on Day One of the 2024 Canadian Open
Marta Kostyuk vs Tatjana Maria
Marta Kostyuk, the 11th seed, will play Tatjana Maria in the first round of the 2024 Canadian Open. Kostyuk was last seen at the Olympics where she reached the quarterfinals, losing to eventual silver-medalist Donna Vekic. Overall, the Ukranian has a 22-13 record this season. She has not won a title this year but reached two finals, at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix and the San Diego Open.
Maria played at the Olympics but was double-bageled by Maria Lourdes Carle of Argentina in the first round. The German has not had the best of seasons in 2024, which is reflected in her 17-22 season record. Reaching the quarterfinals of the Copa Colsanitas has been her best result in 2024.
This will be the first meeting between Kostyuk and Maria on the Tour. Given her current form, the Ukranian is the firm favorite to win the match.
Predicted Winner - Marta Kostyuk
Anastasia Potapova vs Magdalena Frech
Another first-round match at the 2024 Canadian Open will see Anastasia Potapova of Russia lock horns with Magdalena Frech of Poland on Day One. Potapova was last seen at the Citi Open, where she lost in the first round to Taylor Townsend. Overall, she has a 19-16 record in 2024. Among her best results has been reaching the semifinals of the Rothesay Classic and the quarterfinals at the BNP Paribas Open and the Linz Open.
Frech last played at the Olympics, bowing out in the first round after facing Viktoriya Tomova. Overall, the Pole has a 25-21 record in 2024 and reached the final of the Prague Open, losing to compatriot Magda Linette. She also reached the quarterfinals at the Rothesay Open.
This will be the maiden counter between the two players on the WTA tour. However, given her recent form, Frech might have a slight advantage going into the encounter.
Predicted Winner - Magdalena Frech
Dayana Yastremska vs Yulia Putintseva
Day One of the 2024 Candian Open will see 16th seed Dayana Yastremska take on Yulia Putintseva in their first-round matchup. Yastremska was last seen in action at the Olympics, losing to Camila Osorio of Colombia in the second round. The Ukrainian has a 20-14 record in 2024, with a semifinal run at the Australian Open being her most notable result this year.
Meanwhile, Putintseva is having a good season in 2024 with a 31-16 overall record. The Kazakh won the title at the Rothesay Classic, beating Ajla Tomljanovic in the final. She also secured a marquee victory over World No. 1 Iga Swiatek in the third round at Wimbledon. Additionally, she reached the quarterfinals at the Maimi Open and the Madrid Open.
These two players have also not met previously on the WTA Tour. However, given that their upcoming match will be played on a hard court, the advantage lies with Yastremska.
Predicted Winner - Dayana Yastremska
Victoria Azarenka vs Anastsaia Pavlyuchenkova
Former World No. 1 Victoria Azarenka will begin her campaign at the 2024 Canadian Open by taking on Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the first round. Azarenka last played at the Citi Open, losing to top seed Aryna Sabalenka in the quarterfinals. The Belarusian is yet to win a title in 2024 but has reached multiple semifinals, at the EcoTrans Ladies Open, the Miami Open and the Brisbane International.
Pavlyuchenkova has a 22-16 record in 2024, with no titles to her name. The former top-20 player last played at the Citi Open, losing to Amanda Anisimova in the second round. She reached consecutive semifinals at the Linz Open and the Qatar Open during her best phase so far this year.
Azarenka has a 6-2 lead in her head-to-head against Pavlyuchenkova, having won their last encounter at the Dubai Championships last year. Given their record, the former World No. 1 will be the favorite to win the match.
Predicted Winner - Victoria Azarenka
Bianca Andreescu vs Lesia Tsurenko
Former US Open champion and local favorite Bianca Andreescu will start her Canadian Open campaign against Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine on Day One. Andreescu has played only 12 WTA-level matches in 2024, having been recovering from an injury. She made it to the final at the Libema Open where she lost to Liudmila Samsonova.
Tusrenko, meanwhile, is having a poor 2024, as she has a mere 9-13 record and has not managed to win more than two matches consecutively at any of the events she took part in. She last played at the Citi Open, where she lost against Caroline Dolehide in the first round.
Tsurenko has a 2-0 head-to-head record against Andreescu. Their last encounter was at last year's French Open. Given Tusrenko's meagre form and the fact that Andreescu will have the crowd's support behind her, the Canadian is a favorite for this match.
Predicted Winner - Bianca Andreescu
Anna Kalinskaya vs Louisa Chirico
One of the top 10 seeds, Anna Kalinskaya will start her campaign at the 2024 Canadian Open by taking on Louisa Chirico in the first round. Kalinskaya has been out of action for some time since she had to retire from her Round-of-16 match against Elena Rybakina at Wimbledon due to injury. However, the World No. 17 has a 28-13 win/loss count in 2024, having made it to the finals of the EcoTrans Ladies Open and the Dubai Championships.
On the other hand, Chirico has not played a single main draw WTA-level match in 2024. The young American player has mostly played on the ITF Tour and the WTA 125-level tournaments. At the Canadian Open, she managed to win against Arina Rodionova and was awarded a walkover after her subsequent opponent Harriet Dart retired mid-match due to injury, to qualify for the main draw.
These two players are also going to play each other for the first time in their careers. Given that she is the tenth seed, Kalinskaya is the favorite to win the match.
Predicted Winner - Anna Kalinskaya
